'Our goal is to give excellent distance and reading vision with least dependence on spectacles after cataract surgery at American Eye Care Centre. We will take all measures to make cataract surgery painless, stressfree & absolutely safe, with minimal post operative restrictions for patients'. Almost all patients are operated by the chief eye surgeon only. Dr.D.P.Prakh, is the first eye surgeon in the world to perform and document cataract surgery through sub 1mm incision in aug 2003. He is a pioneer in ultra small micro incision cataract surgery with many inventions like "Cut sleeve phakonit", "Prakash turbo chopper". Unique features include"(following futures may not be possible in very few complicated cases)
- No injection - No pain
- No bandage or dark glasses
- Not a drop of blood is lost due to surgery
- No sutures... So no irritation
- Latest micropulse cold phacoemulsification machine
- No need to wear glasses for distance and reading with latest multi-focal oils.
- Patients with astigmatism are treated with limbal relaxing incision and tonic oil.
- Patients can cook, watch tv and return to normal activities in 48 hrs.Post op.
- Patients allowed head bath in 48 hrs.Post op.
There is a natural lens present in our eyes which has flexibility to contract and relax. This lens is transparent to allow light rays to focus on the retina. This lens is made up of water and protein. Sometimes as the eye ages some of the protein undergo changes causing the lens to become discolored and clouded. This is called as cataract.
As we get older just as our hair becomes grey. Natural lens present in our eyes also loses its flexibility and becomes clouded. This usually occurs by 50 years of age. But cataract can occur in younger age too due to following reasons. i) Diabetes Mellitus ii) Injury to the eyes iii) Due to medications like steroid iv) Those who suffer from asthma or skin diseases and other metabolic disorders.
When cataract becomes matured, this can be seen by others as a white discolouration in the eye. During the early stages of cataract patient complaints of dimness of vision for distance and near. Some people may experience cloudy vision. Some others can experience extreme sensitivity to flash light of other vehicles while driving.
By performing cataract surgery, the cataractous (natural) lens which has become clouded is removed and replaced by IOL (intra Ocular Lens) inside the eyes. This is the permanent solution for cataract.
During early stages of cataract patient can be given glasses to ameliorate the diminution of progression of cataract temporarily. Some medications can also be used to reduce the progression of cataract. These measures can temporarily help to postpone the cataract surgery.
A decade ago (Ten years before) patient was advised to undergo cataract surgery only when it gets matured. Nowadays due to recent advances, It is better to undergo cataract surgery even before it becomes matured. Once the cataract becomes matured not only surgery becomes difficult but also there are chances of complications during the surgery. When the cataract becomes matured it becomes difficult to perform surgery with recent methods and we need to do surgery by older methods by using sutures/stitches.
During early stages of cataract, patient can undergo surgery (without sutures, injection, blood loss and pain) by phacoemulsification (laser treatment) and suitable intra ocular lens can be implanted and patient can attain clear vision even on the first day of surgery. However if the cataract matures, or the surgery has been done by older methods by applying sutures then it takes 6 weeks for the patient to get clear vision. Hence it is better to approach and consult an ophthalmologist at early stage and get treated.
Usually it takes around 15 minutes for the cataract surgery done at American Eye Care Centre. However it takes more time for mature cataracts.
Usually at American Eye Care Centre, cataract surgery is done by no injection, no pain, no blood loss technique and hence there is no need for bandage and patient need not stay in the hospital. However doctor may suggest different approach forfew patients.
Patients can resume to their daily activities after 48 hours after uncomplicated surgery. There is no restriction for the patient to cook, to do household chores or to watch television.
Many types of IOL are available, such as: a) Single Vision 101 • to correct distance vision b) Toric Lens - to correct cylindrical power
